Waiting for this delicate, creamy Strawberry Refrigerator Cake to cool and set in the fridge may be pure torture. But we assure you, it's worth it!

Ingredients

Cake:
1 pkg Duncan Hines® Moist Deluxe® Strawberry Supreme Cake Mix
Approximately 10oz of sweetened, frozen sliced strawberries, thawed
Topping:
1 (3.4 oz) pkg vanilla instant pudding and pie filling
1 cup milk
3 cups frozen non-dairy whipped topping
fresh strawberries

Baking Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 ºF. Grease and flour 13x9-inch pan.
For cake, prepare, bake and cool according to package directions.
Poke holes 1 inch apart in top of cake using handle from wooden spoon.
Puree thawed strawberries with juice in blender. Spoon evenly over top of cake allowing mixture to soak into holes.
For topping, prepare pudding mix according to package directions using 1 cup milk. Fold whipped topping into pudding mixture. Spread over cake. Garnish with fresh strawberries. Refrigerate at least 4 hours.

i make this . its the hubbys favorite. i add some chopped strawberries to the cake , bettween the cake and the topping i put sliced banannas, and on top of the cake i put mini chocolate morsels, tastes just like a bananna split, verry yummy.

I actually bake my cake the night before, poke the holes, pour in the pureed strawberries so that it soaks overnight (very juicy), then prepare the topping the next morning.

I've made this recipe from a Duncan Hines Cook Book and it used the French Vanilla Cake Mix. It was a family get together and my nephew ate 3 pieces, stating that it tasted just like Strawberry Short Cake. That occasion was the first time I had ever mixed the whipped topping w/ pudding for an icing. It really was delicious.

It calls for 3 cups frozen non-dairy whipped topping and "fresh" strawberries but the direcions say "shawed strawberries???Huh?

I puree the frozen strawberries and pour them on the cake to go in the holes then for the topping I do the pudding and whip cream. Then slice fresh strawberries on top.

No. Maybe if you would thin them down with something. Straight preserves would be to thick to flow down in the holes in the cake. And frozen strawberries are less expensive to use. Go to the store and get some frozen berries.

My Mom used to make this cke all the time when I was young. Instead of frozen strawberries, she would use strawberry jello. It was so moist and delicious!!!

I just found this recipe. I have been looking for a GOOD strawberry cake recipe. Can anybody that has made this before, tell me... Would this be good w/ butter cream frosting (made from scratch, not out of a can) ? Also, does it sit out ok, or does it start to get soggy ? I normally frost it with butter cream frosting and it works and taste wonderful. The longer its out of the frig the softer the frosting gets. also forsoter

By the way, I do use sugar free pudding, sugar free cool whip and fat free milk, so, yes, I do change things a bit, but then I am diabetic, so this works for me to where I can eat some as well.

Made this today....used the frosting suggestion from sara.c.johnson listed here...I also had a bottle of strawberry sunday topping that I used on top of cake....This is by far one of the best cake we have ever had for Sunday Dinner....and It could not have been easier to make!!

This is a great cake and a favorite of mine. The only change I made was in the icing. The very smart friend who gave me the recipe uses a cream cheese frosting with 8 oz of cream cheese, ½ cup of sugar, 1 cup of powdered sugar, and an 8 oz tub of Cool Whip. Makes the cake in my opinion!

You can use a regular white or yellow cake mix but of course it would not be pink, of have the extra strawberry flavor.

Hello! I made this cake today and I guess I didn't understand all of the directions because it was very messy to make. My first mistake was taking the cake out of the pan. Second mistake was using a wooden spoon for the holes (needed something smaller). Third, using strawberries that had alot of juice (the ones in the tube). And fourth, I should of let the vanilla pudding sit and thicken before folding in the whipped topping. It's a great cake with a wonderful taste.

I've made this recipe before and have not thought of it as messy, but I usually leave the cake in the pan. It isn't as prett as serving it on a nice dish, but it is definitely easier (and less messy) to serve straight out of the cake pan.

I've been making a variation of this cake for a few years now... Instead of pureeing the strawberries, i just pour them as they are and i do that as soon as the cake comes out of the oven while it's still warm. also, for the topping, i use white chocolate pudding mix instead of vanilla and i put shredded coconut on top instead of strawberries..

I've made this recipe for years and it always goes over well. I make it more sugar free friendly though. I use sugar free vanilla pudding, fat free milk, which has same amount of carbs and sugars but lower fat, sugar free cool whip and the lower sugar frozen strawberries that are made with splenda in them. No one ever says they notice a difference and for someone diabetic like myself, I look for low sugar/carb desserts all I can.

I made this for my daughter. I think the vanilla instant pudding is 1 oz. not 3.4oz. Took me a minute to figure out that it isn't the large box as that is not 3.4 either. I did turn it out of the pan onto a foil covered cookie sheet after cooling for 15 min in the pan. It worked fine

Due to the length of words I'm able to use I had to break my story into several sections. Thanks Hello I'm new to the group and I normally don't participate in open discussions, but I just had to share my last few days’ experiences with you. Okay so this is how it all started. I use to order this wonderful Strawberry Cake from a lady that was introduced to me through the "Public Office" I worked in. We’ll just call her the "Cake Lady". The first of the year, I transitioned into another "Public Office" and let’s just say this office is a tough group of people, with no unity to say the least. So I thought the best way to their inner human side is to start bringing in homemade baked goods. That said I reached out to my famous "Cake Lady" for one of her fabulous strawberry cakes that I so loved. Just as I thought it was a total hit and it began to melt away the rough edges to my new surroundings. (Naturally, I didn't let on that I didn’t make the cake, LOL yea the life of a politician!) Okay moving forward to present day, it was decided Monday past that our office would have a luncheon on Thursday, and guess who was ask to bring that heavenly strawberry cake again -- ME!!

Third and final part of my story: As I sat in my kitchen the night before the luncheon, with the second failed attempted recreating this desired strawberry cake, I began reconsidering the call in sick thing. Now feeling deflated and defeated with my head on the kitchen table at 9:45pm, Wednesday night looking at my ONE and only last box of Duncan Hines Strawberry Cake Mix there it was, could it be? Could it be the recipe that I’ve been so desperately trying to recreated? So I grabbed my computer and logged on to the Duncan Hines website and there it was, the Strawberry Refrigerator Cake! Could this be the "Cake Ladies" secret recipe! Yes, this is her recipe.....I’ve CRACKED her recipe. So once again, I'm the Belle of the Ball and I have this wonderful recipe to thank for it. Next week, the Pink Ruffle Cake!

Second part of my story: As I accepted the request, I thought to myself "Hey No Problem" and headed back to my office using my cell phone not to chance just in case my office phone was tapped, reveling that I’m not the true owner of that “Famous Strawberry Cake”. I quickly called my “Cake Lady” to request another miracle to be preformed for this unassuming bunch. Then the unthinkable happened, how could this be? This must be a joke or did someone find out that I didn’t make this cake and was just trying to flush me out? My "Cake Lady" was going out of town and couldn't make the famous strawberry cake, at that moment I thought OMG, what am I going to do. As sheer panic set in through my whole body, I had to come up with something, what could I do? I thought about just calling in sick that day, so I can protect my reputation as the creator of this wonderful cake! There was only one way out of this and it was to go off memory to try and figure out the ingredients to this cake. It was so much more than a box of strawberry cake mix and cool whip. Let's put it this way, thank God for my husband, he had to eat three cakes in three days time as I tried to figure out what makes this cake so sought after.

I'm sorry but why would anyone try to mix frozen whipped topping into anything. It seems to me that common sense would tell you to thaw the whipped topping. I've made this cake many time with strawberry jello poured over cake and it was delicious. Put a teaspoon of strawberry extract and 1 teaspoon of vanilla in the topping and it is very refreshing.

Exactly, common sense...anyone knows that a non dairy frozen whipped topping doesn't freeze solid. It thaws rather quickly almost instantly at room temp. So why would you let it sit out any length of time? I've made this type of cake for years and it's wonderful recipe.

Ive been making this cake for years, but without the pudding mix and milk. I usually add a little strawberry glaze with pureed berries and use just the regular or strawberry flavored whipped topping and fresh berries to top it all off.

My mother and I make a variation to this cake that is out of this world! Cut the strawberries into small pieces, and soak them in daquiri mix with sugar over night, and then put them on top of the strawberry cake and let the mix soak in, and cover with your favorite topping. (We use cool whip) It is a fantastic variation!

I am making this cake and find the directions are not that clear. I am not a "new" cook who does not understand cooking and baking terms. When I went to the store to purchase the frozen strawberries I had 2 choices, a plastic package of whole frozen berries, 12 oz. or a plastic container of 16 oz. or 24 oz. sliced strawberries in syrup. With all my baking experience, I still have know idea which one I should have gotten. I purchased 2 plastic tubs of sliced strawberries in syrup, but plan possibly not to use one of the containers. The cake might be too soggy. Since many of you made this cake what berries did you use? I also wish you could print only the picture and recipe instead of 8 pages of comments. I like to print the recipe and if it was liked and if I did anything different to it. I was tickled at the remark that one cook didn't thaw the Cool Whip, the recipe should say that too. I'll bet you did have a hard time folding two clods of Cool Whip into the pudding. I THINK THE RECIPES NEED TO BE WRITTEN IN MORE DETAIL.

I make this cake often - it is a family favorite! I buy a 16 oz. container of frozen strawberries with sugar and use the whole thing except for about 2 Tbsp. I reserve to mix in with the pudding/whipped topping for the icing. I also garnish it with a few sliced, fresh strawberries when they are in season. Hope this helps!

I cool the cake completely before poking holes. I also use a plastic spoon (it has a round handle like a wooden spoon) and spray the handle with nonstick cooking spray first. Hope this helps!

I actually made a more homemade strawberry cake but used this recipe for the icing. The homemade mix involved french vanilla cake mix and strawberry gelatin just to give an idea. I wondered if the recipe meant to say to thaw the whipped topping first -- I didn't thaw it and it was really hard to mix in with the pudding and had chunks of unthawed parts. I read the recipe beforehand to see if there was anything that would take extra time for planning purposes -- however, once I saw all the somewhat frozen chunks I wish I had more time to thaw it even though it didnt say to. I read others say they used cheesecake flavored pudding and I wanted to try that but wasn't sure how cheesecake-y the flavor would be so I actually used half cheesecake half vanilla and it was really good.

My mother used to make something similar to this cake. Instead of using the pureed strawberry mix she just made strawberry jello and poured it over the cake and let it soak through then she would let the entire cake chill in the fridge for about an hour or two. Always a classic!

This is exactly what I was referring to on "Steve's Strawberry Cake" recipe. It's so good! But instead of the vanilla pudding, I use Cheesecake flavored pudding. Sometimes it's hard to spread because some of the strawberry puree sticks to the pudding topping. I sometimes make a second batch just to touch up, or just add a little extra cool whip to cover up after, I finished. This is soo good especially in the summer time.

I just made this today only I added my own twist. I used 16 oz's of whipped creamcheese and about 1 jar of Fluff or to your taste. Mix it together and put on your cake then add the strawberries. The icing I used is usually used for a fruit dip, but is yummy on a cake!

This is a delicously light and airy cake that tastes heavenly. I made this cake for my sister's Valentine's Day Birthday and everyone loved it. I used a white cake mix instead of the strawberry cake mix and it was great. I'm getting ready to make it again for my mother for Mother's Day tomorrow.

A terrific, surprizingly light dessert! I have also used prureed fresh strawberries or frozen. No sugar added cool whip and sugar-free pudding also are nice too.

This cake creates a fresh and fun spin on the old poke (jello) cake. I first had this cake just a few weeks ago and plan on making it the main dessert at Easter dinner.

When i was a little tiney girl my grandmother used to make a cake very much like this one.I remember she would use whatever berries were in season,or whatever fruit we had recently picked ,or in grandmas words"whatever tickled our fancy" that day! always a fabulous choice no matter what the season I have never had a complaint ,nine times out of nine i've been asked to make extra because it disappears way to quickly!
